He also leaves two cherished great grandchildren, Colton and Emira Blaydes. He enjoyed the company of two step-grandchildren, many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Joseph grew up in the Charles Street neighborhood of Providence during the Great Depression, he was an enterprising worker finding ways to earn money, like selling apples to workers on the streets in the morning. He would often gather pieces of coal on the railroad tracks to help heat his family’s home. A fond memory was seeing the Hindenburg fly by his school in 1937, on its way to Lakehurst, NJ.
He joined the Merchant Marines and spent eight years travelling the Globe, bringing supplies to our warships and making memories. He survived a sinking ship that was torpedoed during WWII yet never thought of himself as a hero.
Joe and his wife Shirley were energetic, fun-loving people who enjoyed cookouts on the beach, neighborhood and family pool parties, cruises and land vacations with family.
Joe was a jewelry tool maker. He and his wife were camera buffs, and took lots of photos and movies, Joe would always be seen with his camcorder around the pool decks on cruise ships. They also spent many weekends shooting professional wedding photos in the early days.
Joe loved his family with a passion. He had lots of friends and made more every day, He was a natural with children and animals, and you couldn’t help but love him.
He had a voracious appetite and always bragged about Shirley’s cooking. He was a tinkerer and refused to give up on difficult projects. One week ago, he repaired a wall clock that others had given up on. Right up to the end, he was sharp, focused, witty and fun. We will miss his infectious smile.
