George Washburn, born on the 9th of April, 1937 in Boston, Massachusetts, was a beacon of kindness and resilience, radiating warmth to everyone he encountered. His journey through life was guided by the principle that "the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others," a quote by Mahatma Gandhi that perfectly encapsulates George's altruistic spirit.
George proudly served his country in the United States Air Force as an Airman until his honorable discharge in 1955. He dedicated his professional life to serving his community as a clerk in the United States Post Office. Beyond his work, his passions were diverse and colorful. He found joy in the simple pleasures of coin and Hummel collecting, and he was an ardent fan of the Boston Celtics, holding season tickets at Boston Garden during the 1960s. George was also an esteemed member of the Masonic Lodge in Melrose, MA. Above all, George was a dedicated volunteer at the council on aging in Melrose, where he selflessly transported seniors to their medical appointments. His compassionate spirit made him beloved amongst the staff and seniors alike.
George is survived by his son, George Devlin; his brothers, Kenneth, Gary, and Franklin Washburn; his sister, Linda Young; his daughter-in-law, Teresa Devlin; his grandchildren, Christopher Devlin, Nicholas Devlin, and Jennifer Gartrell; and his great-grandchildren, Shawn, Calvin, and Ella Gartrell. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Alice Washburn; his sisters, Martha Crowley, Margaret Wenzelberger, Rosemary Ingersoll, Janice Freeland, Carol King, and Alice Roussel; and his brothers, Charles and Ernest Jr. Washburn.
In the spirit of George's dedication to service, we honor his wish to live on in the memories of those he loved and served. As we remember George, we hope his life story encourages everyone to cherish every moment, to serve others selflessly, and above all, to love unconditionally.
