Edward Thomas “Spags” Fontneau passed away on October 15, 2026, in Attleboro, MA. Known for his larger-than-life personality, quick wit, and gift for storytelling, Spags lived life to the fullest and leaves behind a lifetime of wonderful memories for those fortunate enough to have known him.
Born on August 28, 1945 in Attleboro, he was the son of the late Edward Louis Fontneau and Ann (Finn) Fontneau. He was a graduate of Attleboro High School, Class of 1963.
A hardworking and accomplished businessman, Spags proudly owned Colonial Contracting & Design in Norton, MA, where he established a successful career as a general contractor. He also owned Colonial Motors, Inc. His entrepreneurial spirit, strong work ethic, and passion for his businesses were evident throughout his life.
Above all else, Spags was a family man. He was the beloved husband of Audry (Thatcher) Fontneau of Norton. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his four loving children: Erin (Fontneau) Barbosa, Amy Perry, and Kate Fontneau, all of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, and Ryan Fontneau of Attleboro, Massachusetts. He was the dear brother of Sherry (Fontneau) O’Neil of Pocasset, Massachusetts.
Affectionately known as “Grampa Glasses” to his grandchildren, Spags took tremendous pride in his growing family. He leaves behind nine cherished grandchildren: Michael Mason and his wife, Kendra, of Cumberland, Rhode Island; Kyin Machado, Tylee Machado, Adriana Barbosa, Gabriella Barbosa, Trezyn Machado, Julia Laznik, and Abraham Laznik, all of Pawtucket, Rhode Island; and Harper Fontneau of Attleboro, Massachusetts. He was also the proud great-grandfather of Layah Mason of Cumberland, Rhode Island. He also shared a special bond with his beloved corgi, "Molly," a treasured companion.
Spags had a passion for classic automobiles and was an avid collector who appreciated the beauty, craftsmanship, and history of vintage cars. He was a member of the Boston Area Roadsters and enjoyed sharing his enthusiasm for automobiles with fellow collectors and friends. Some of his favorite times were spent on Tuesday nights at the shop with the boys.
He also loved spending time on the water, boating and lobstering, and especially enjoyed summers at Sagamore Beach, MA. Whether he was out on the boat, working on a classic car, or simply enjoying the company of family and friends, Spags knew how to make the most of every moment.
Sports were another important part of Spags’ life. He enjoyed playing softball and golf, sponsoring local sports teams, and coaching his own children. He believed in supporting his community and giving young athletes the opportunity to learn, compete, and enjoy the game.
Spags was a lifelong member of the Lions Club and a member of the Moose Club, reflecting his appreciation for friendship, fellowship, and community involvement.
Perhaps what people will remember most about Spags was his wonderful sense of humor. A natural storyteller and avid jokester, he had a way of bringing people together and filling a room with laughter. Whether sharing a familiar story for the hundredth time or delivering a perfectly timed joke, Spags had a personality that made every gathering a little more memorable.
