David, age 71, passed away on May 9, 2026. Born on December 12, 1954, David spent much of his life surrounded by those who came to know and care for him deeply. Since joining the Amego family in 1996, David became a beloved part of the lives of the residential and day program staff, as well as his housemates and peers, many of whom grew deeply fond of David and came to cherish his presence over the years. David also shared a close bond with his mother, Ruby Eskridge, who loved him dearly and often visited to spend time and have lunch with him before her passing several years ago.
David was a Protestant man who enjoyed attending church, music, and being around people. He had a personality all his own and was never afraid to let others see his true colors, so no matter what kind of mood he was in, you always knew where you stood with him. When he wanted space, he would let you know with a quick “Don’t bother me” or “Leave me alone.” But when David was happy, he was jovial, playful, and full of life. He loved watching the activity around him, dancing, rocking in his chair, listening to “Sweet Home Alabama,” participating in music therapy, and enjoying cookies and coffee with the people around him.
David brought energy, humor, and unpredictability wherever he went. His feisty charm and unforgettable personality left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. One of David’s most memorable expressions was his frequent request for a “clean one,” his well-known way of asking for a clean white t-shirt. David took great pride in his white shirts and did not like stains on them. Staff who knew him best immediately understood exactly what he meant, and he would even check the pockets of staff or hurry to the laundry room himself to see if someone had one nearby. It became one of the many little things about David that people came to smile about, laugh about, and cherish over the years.
Sometimes David’s words could be difficult to understand, but the people who knew him best understood that he was trying to communicate and express himself in his own way. When he especially liked someone, he would warmly greet them with the word “loving.” He was intelligent in his own way, formed meaningful connections with the people around him, and was known for his firm handshakes and unforgettable smile that could light up a room.
David also had a way of surprising people. He might refuse routine lab work from a solo phlebotomist on an ordinary day, yet calmly sit smiling in a hospital room while several medical staff attended to him without complaint. His reactions, routines, humor, and personality made him unforgettable to all who knew him.
Although it was anticipated that David would return home from the hospital, his passing came as a heartbreaking loss to all who loved and cared for him. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his Amego family, his housemates, his peers, and all those whose lives were touched by his warmth, humor, and one of a kind spirit.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, June 4, 2026 at Duffy-Poule Funeral Home, 20 Peck Street, Attleboro, MA. A luncheon at the Amego office located at 33 Perry Avenue, Attleboro, MA will follow the funeral home service. Private burial will take place at a later date.
