Mr. Carl E. Otto Obituary (1922

ATTLEBORO – Carl Edward Otto of Attleboro died on Sunday, June 1, 2014 at the Life Care Center of Attleboro, after a six month period of declining health. Carl was born in Willsboro, New York on June 28, 1922 to Marion (Mero) and Carl Otto. He was predeceased by his loving wife Pauline (Dailey) Otto, who died on March 19, 2006. He is survived by his five beloved children; Carlene and her husband Roger Ferris, David Otto and his wife Lyn-Su, Susan and her husband Raymond LeFrancois, Glenn Otto and his wife Bonnie and Peter Otto and his wife Lisa. He is survived by his adored grandchildren; Thomas E. Burke III and his wife Sheryl, Nicole Otto, Christopher Hanson, David M. Otto, Jessica Otto, Shannon Otto, Megan Otto and Derrick Otto. Carl was very proud of his family and he was especially fond of his grandchildren. He also leaves his precious great grandchildren; Nicholas Mercer, Hannah Burke, Thomas E. Burke IV and Ava Hanson. He was a family man. “Gumpy”, as everyone called him, was a true hero: Someone who commits an act of remarkable bravery or shows great courage or strength of character. We were always proud to call Gumpy our Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather and Friend. We will always miss you and remember you. Carl was a gentle man and a gentleman. Carl grew up on Short Street and attended Attleboro Public Schools. Just before graduation from high school he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and on August 12, 1940 he was assigned to a gunner’s mate position aboard the USS Bagley. Carl enjoyed the Navy life and the travels he made. In December of 1941 while stationed at Pearl Harbor, the Japanese attacked and Carl lived through the “Day of Infamy” at twenty years old. He had many memories of this historic event. He was later assigned to the USS Bancroft and was honorably discharged from the Navy in August of 1946. Carl returned to Attleboro, began working at Larson Tool and met and married Pauline Dailey. When the family began to grow, Carl became a patrolman for the City of Attleboro where he was the local cop on the beat for many years. He retired from the police force in 1981. In his retirement years he worked as a bank courier for the First Bristol County Bank. Carl and Pauline bought a mobile home and spent six months of the year at the Bourne Scenic Park, pleased by the views of the Cape Cod Canal. Later they bought a home in Wareham, MA and made new friends, enjoying the Sippican Seniors, bowling and card games. Carl and Pauline next moved to Norwood, MA to be closer to family. Following Pauline’s death, Carl moved into Christopher Heights Assisted Living in Attleboro where he enjoyed reading, luncheon conversations and friendships with the employees there who made his life more worthwhile. He resided there for eight years and only moved out in January, 2014 when he began experiencing health problems. To the staff at Life Care of Attleboro who helped him and loved him also in his last six months of life, a big thank you is due to all of you. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Wednesday, June 4, from 4-8 p.m. in the Duffy-Poule Funeral Home, 20 Peck St., Attleboro, MA. A funeral will be conducted on Thursday, June 5, at 9 a.m. from the Duffy-Poule Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian burial, at 10 a.m. in St. John's the Evangelist Church, 133 North Main St., Attleboro, MA. Burial with full military honors will follow at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, MA.
