Anthony Hunt Gowen

–

Attleboro, Massachusetts

Anthony Hunt Gowen (Tony), 89, of Attleboro passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, August 15, 2026 surrounded by his loving family. A lifelong resident of Attleboro, Tony was born to the late Horace B. Gowen and Mildred A. Gowen. He is survived by his loving wife of sixty-two years; May Gowen, his daughter, Minda Gowen-Miller and son-in-law Stuart Miller; son Tyler Gowen and daughter-in-law Francine Gowen; and his two grandchildren Ellie and Jack; and son Stephen Gowen. Tony is also survived by a brother David Gowen and many nephews and nieces.

Tony spent his formative years in Attleboro before attending Governor's Academy where he was a track and field state champion in hurdles, then graduated from Nichols College. After serving in the Army Reserves, he joined his father’s local real estate company before eventually taking the company over. He later closed the firm to join a colleague at a local real estate agency. More than anything he loved the long-lasting friendships he made and being a part of a bigger team.

As a believer in giving back to the community, he was a member of the Red Cross Attleboro Chapter and served as its president for several years. He also served on the Board of Directors for Attleboro’s Conservation Commission, was the Chairman of the Attleboro Board of Assessors, and President of the Attleboro Lions Club of which he was a member for over 50-years. In addition, Tony was a director of the Grievance Committee for the Attleboro Board of Realtors, the State Grievance Committee of the State Board of Realtors, and served on the Board of Realtors State Professional Standard Committee.

In Attleboro, Tony grew up on County Street, directly across from Capron Park. He fondly would recall hearing the roar of the lion and other animals at night when he was a child. This led to his lifelong passion for the great outdoors and wildlife. Tony became a member of the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) where he trailblazed with the AMC team throughout the White Mountains and beyond getting the trails ready for the seasonal hikers. Both friends and family enjoyed many trips climbing the highest peaks across New England, with Tony leading the way. His love of nature extended to the ocean, specifically Lewis Bay and Provincetown on the Cape, where he spent many summers with his family.

As a fitness enthusiast, Tony without fail, for over 50-years, three mornings a week, at 4:30am could be found at the Attleboro YMCA being the very first member through the door. He was a proud member of the elite “Early Risers” club.

Tony was always up for an adventure, clambakes in Maine, exploring Southern California, walking Quebec’s Old City and taking in the music of New Orleans. As long as he was accompanied by family, especially his wife, the location didn’t matter.

All those who were fortunate enough to have met Tony would say he was truly one of the kindest people they met. He always saw the inherent goodness in people and treated everyone with a tender touch. Tony also had one of the cheekiest senses of humor. Everyone who knew this would fight to be the one to sit next to him at the table, because you just didn’t know what was going to come out of his mouth. But it was sure to be memorable and provide one heck of a chuckle, if not at times completely inappropriate!

Two fun facts about Tony: He refused to eat pizza and he never liked the Red Sox. Rooted against the Sox every time…

The Gowen family would like to extend their gratitude to Hope Health Hospice for their comfort and support.

A private service will be held.
